World Sea Ice, Orca and Shark Awareness Day
This week we celebrated Shark Awareness Day, Sea Ice Day, and Orca Day. Three days to shine a spotlight on ecosystems and species being driven to extinction by reckless exploitation and human greed. 100 million sharks are slaughtered every year because of their fins and meat driving a lot of species to the verge of extinction. It is estimated we have lost more than 70% of shark populations in the last decades. Sea Ice Day brings awareness to the rapid loss of polar ice due to climate change fueled by anthropogenic warming of the planet, driven by the fossil fuel industry prioritizing profits over the health of our home. Orca Day celebrated the top apex ruler of the ocean, while Resident Southern Orcas face starvation from overfished prey and dams. It is vital we strive to restore salmon populations and eliminate dam impacts for their survival.
Indigenous knowledge + our best science will forever be our way forward out of the mess we are in. Overfishing and dependence on fossil fuels are all solvable problems. We have the technology, the science, and the knowledge to build a healthier planet and restore our broken relationship with our home, our source of life, not a resource to be drained.
